Supported living for learning disabilities

Two-weeks ago, the Equality and Human Rights Commission issued a pre-action letter to the UK Government, citing that those in charge of healthcare throughout the UK are failing to transfer those living with learning disabilities and autism into appropriate care and accommodation.

Transforming care

The Transforming Care Agenda aims to improve the life of children, young people and adults living with complex learning disabilities and/or autism.

Developed to ensure people living with such needs are able to receive the right care, but also maintain an independent lifestyle, the agenda means fewer people will be placed in hospital or in nursing care, if they don’t need to be.

Supported living services, such as the Community Pathways from Virtue Health Services, ensure individuals have their own space, their own home, but receive the right amount of care and support required.

It has been found that the Care Quality Commission have presented delays in registering new services; however, is this down to the lack of staff within the care industry – are there too many new services opening and not enough officials to monitor and register them?

The move from wraparound care

Many individuals throughout the UK, living with complex learning disabilities and autism, are currently placed within more wraparound care – such as a nursing home, when actually, they don’t need to be.

Although residential care is quality care, it can often be too much for those who can maintain an independent lifestyle. Often, individuals living with learning disabilities or autism, require assistance with medication or bathing, as well as other daily tasks.

This has opened the doors for Virtue Health Services model of Community Pathways, where individuals have their own space and can complete activities as they please; whilst receiving care and support

The Community Pathway model from Virtue Health Services, is based around a community model, with three Virtue properties located close to each other, often on the same street. This proximity allows individuals and staff to develop social links, friendships and support networks between each other and within the wider community, combining independence and support which is flexible to suit each individual.

Ashdale House – the first Pathway – will officially open on March 11, and will be home to two individuals. Register here, as the Civic Mayor Councillor of Doncaster, officially opens the service.

At Virtue Health Services we equip individuals with the confidence and skills to develop an identity within their community, make their own decisions and live the best version of their life. With a focus on rehabilitation into a more independent life, we still provide the much required care and support. So, even if individuals cannot live without some form of care and support, they are still more independent than they perhaps thought achievable.

Our dedicated teams work with individuals and families to develop goals and support them to maintain and develop their skills, transitioning along a pathway towards independence. Make a referral today
