Supported living services vs. residential care

Our people

Virtue Health Services provide bespoke person-centred care and supported living, to adults living with complex needs.

But, what is the difference between supported living services and residential care? Does something make one better than the other? Or, does one provide more than the other?

Here, we explore the key differences so you can understand what can be expected as a standard of care and living for your loved one, or your patient.

Supported living care – what’s involved?
Supported living care is made up of a group of homes, often shared by 2 or 3 people living with similar complex needs. The homes look and feel just like a ‘regular’ home, featuring communal areas and private bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

Care teams are on hand to support individuals with these tasks and ensure the living environment will always meet the individuals needs. This means, individuals have a home of their own; whilst benefiting from supported care to ensure any medicines have been taken, individuals have washed or to assist with tasks such as shopping or washing.

Living in supported care enables individuals to maximise their independence and to engage in activities they enjoy – external to their care environment. A more flexible option than residential care, supported living also enables individuals to feel as though they belong to their local community. Just like those living in non-supported care, they have neighbours, a private garden and can access the local corner shop if needs be.

Each individual’s care plan is designed based on their needs and with the aim of making a positive difference to their daily life. Where possible,  their loved ones will be aware of the goals they are working towards, as will any professionals involved in their care.

Living in their own home, individuals will gain more independence and life-skills, whilst knowing they have access to additional support from care teams where required.

Residential care – what makes it different?
As with supported living, personal care, accommodation and care teams form part of residential care. However, with residential care – be it a care or nursing home – meals, 24-hour live-in support and shared facilities are found.

Residential care is often provided to those who are struggling to live alone – even with the assistance of additional support, there is often a needs assessments in place, stating residential care is in the individuals best interest.

Residential care homes often provide care to individuals with a range of complex needs; whereas supported living services will often house individuals with similar needs, to prevent potential negative environments. As staffing is often stretched within residential care – more services users and not always enough staff – some individuals may not have as much access to carry out their chosen activities, when they want.

What makes Virtue the right choice?
Our services are based around a community model, with three Virtue properties located close to each other, often on the same street. This proximity allows individuals and staff to develop social links, friendships and support networks between each other and within the wider community, combining independence and support which is flexible to suit each individual.

It’s our mission is to provide high-quality care, within a well-equipped and homely environment, enabling our guests to live enriched, meaningful and happy lives.

At Virtue Health Services we equip individuals with the confidence and skills to develop an identity within their community, make their own decisions and live the best version of their life. With a focus on rehabilitation into a more independent life, we still provide the much required care and support. So, even if individuals cannot live without some form of care and support, they are still more independent than they perhaps thought achievable.

Our dedicated teams work with individuals and families to develop goals and support them to maintain and develop their skills, transitioning along a pathway towards independence. Make a referral today.
